How to calculate Body Mass Index

The best way to calculate Body Mass Index is using this formula
BMI = weight (kilos)/ (height)2 metres2

for example:

weight = 45 kilos
height = 1,51 metres
So the BMI = 45 kg / (1,51)
2 = 19,7359765
After knowing your BMI, you can match it with BMI classification that stated by WHO in 2000.
Table: BMI classification (for Asian people)

Category BMI (kg/m2)
Less weight < 18,5
Normal 18,5 – 22,9
Overweight risk 23-24,9
Obesity level I 25,0 – 29,9
Obesity level II >= 30,0

There is one more thing to consider, that is fat accumulation. There are two kinds of fat accumulation, that is in lower part of the body and in abdominal part (abdominal obesity). Research found that there is connection between abdominal obesity and risk of heart disease.

If you want to know whether there is too many fat accumulation, use waist circumreference measurement. For Asian women, it is considered to have another disease if her waist is equal or greater than 80 cm, and for Asian men if his waist is equal or greater than 90 cm
