I suppose overdoing anything will trigger a negative effect in the body. But the sceintists who discovered Vit C and E both received the Nobel Prize for medicine in the 80s (or was it 70s). Several researchers who discovered AntiOxidants and discovered the medicinal/theraupetic benefits of certain herbs have also received Nobel Prizes for their work.

On the other hand, its commonly accepted that excess Vit B and other minerals are not excreted from the body but actually remain stored in the liver and this can in older years affect the capacity of the liver to function effectively. But its widely agreed among the medical faculty that a good and easily absorbable mutli vitamin supplement with the basic minerals aid the body in various ways.

Nothing in excess of course but I never heard of just one multi vite + mineral supplement actually being bad for us.

which doctor told you that? there's no evidence as to how efficiently these vitamins and supplements are being absorbed by our body. and i know that we cant produce our own vitamins. thats why you're advised to eat loads of fruits and vege. and i've never heard of any doctor telling me not to take vitamins or supplements. they encourage, but they don't compell since there's no evidence as i stated earlier.
and im trying my best to be polite here but - your questions are too long. if you're tryinig to show off your knowledge in the medical/pharmaceutical sphere, this is not the platform my dear.

Because all natural things are overthecounter, doctors make a lot of their money from prescriptions.

Yes I agree with Optimus even my own family doctor does not recommend taking vitamin supplements. He claims that our body can get all the required vitamins and minerals from our normal intake of food which to me is not always possible.

Hey there,
I am chinese and my family and I use chinese medicine sometimes.
I think the doctors disapprove because sometimes some bad chinese doctors put bad stuff in there that you don't know. So my family usually don't accept the powder ones. But we usually eat the ones that we cook and have visible herbs.
Alot of doctors think it is not as effective. Since it works slower. Both has it's plus side and bad side. Chinese medicine restructs the whole body, while American medicine doesn't. Instead it heals one part and destroys another. So their always is a side effect of American medicine. Like good for stomach bad for kidney. But it works much faster.
Also some stuff with your body is considered bad in Chinese, while normal in American medicine. So maybe that is why they think its weird.
Hoped I helped!

Doctors base their diagnoses on medical studies and proven medical facts. That is why they went to medical school. They can only prescribe the medicines that have been proven to work. Herbal
supplements aren't always beneficial for everyone
so the doctors can't rely on that information. Today people love to sue so if a doctor were to prescribe something not proven and that patient
died the doctor would be sued. They error on the side of caution. They have to where human life is
concerned.

The Pharmacy Tech gave you the best answer you are going to get. However, I wanted to add some that I know about from working in a health food store.

Vitamin C starts to become more acidic after the expiration date (the mfg. company knows when this is - they don't just make it up). Anything with oil in it starts very quickly to go rancid (fish oil, vitamin E, lecithin, et.al.) and become a carcinogen. The salicyns (White Willow, Wintergreen, Poplar, Birch, Meadowsweet) go acid very quickly after expiration. B vitamins deteriorate quickly and are useless.

Most other herbs, if they don't have any vitamins or other stuff in them, are safe to take, just not as potent as they were, for up to a year after the expiration. If they are alcohol extracts, they keep a long time, maybe 3 years past as a general rule. Single minerals, too, keep pretty well for 2-3 years past expiration.
